Malcolm Washington’s Vision: “Terrifying and Sacred”
In his director’s statement, Malcolm Washington described the adaptation process as “both terrifying and sacred.” He immersed himself in Wilson’s world by walking Pittsburgh’s Hill District, where the playwright grew up, and spoke intimately with Wilson’s family to stay true to the source material.
Through this process, Washington saw his own reflection in the Charles family—characters struggling with how to honor the past while building a future. As he put it:
“This is more than a film. It’s a living dialogue with our ancestors.”
What Is The Piano Lesson About?
Set in 1936 Pittsburgh, the story follows the Charles family, who own a piano engraved with their ancestors’ images—a deeply symbolic heirloom. When Boy Willie, played by John David Washington, returns home determined to sell the piano and buy land, he clashes with his sister Berniece, portrayed by Danielle Deadwyler, who wants to preserve it.
The central conflict reflects a larger question: Should the past be monetized or memorialized?
